Chilli B’s is my ‘go to’ local eatery, especially to treat myself, family or friends to breakfast. When friends come to stay, we inevitably end up having an early morning stroll through gorgeous Hitchin on our way to Chilli B’s! When we decided to revive BestCuppa, our café review website we first started back in 2005, our first review on the new site was an obvious one – and an excuse to visit for breakfast 🙂
On Saturday 4th February 2017, Millie-Mae and I found ourselves in Hitchin bright and early as she had a first-appointment-of-the-day haircut. With Toby and Huw on Cub Scouts duty, selling raffle tickets outside the local Tesco, we grabbed the opportunity for a mum and daughter breakfast at Chilli B’s.
On the breakfast menu you’ll find, among other delights, Scottish smoked salmon with local free-range scrambled eggs served with toast, mushrooms, and avocado. Or a Stack of free-range eggs, Butcher’s thick cut bacon stacked high between toasted buttered ciabatta. Their Full Breakfast is a feast for the eyes, as well as the belly! Millie-Mae took a lifetime to pick from the menu, while I only needed a glimpse to check they hadn’t stopped making their American Stack … fabulously fluffy pancakes with blueberries stacked high with maple syrup and crispy bacon on the top. Yum!
I judge a café by the quality of their flat whites (I was drinking flat whites long before they became trendy!) – Chilli B’s make a very good flat white with illy coffee … I’ve not had a bad one yet there! Friends often comment on their lovely teapigs range of tea and fruit teas. Millie-Mae chose apple juice, and I placed our order at the till.
I should have taken a photo of the cakes surrounding the till … oh wow … works of art and very mouth-watering. I believe these are made locally. Next visit, I’ll definitely try the cake 🙂
The atmosphere inside Chilli B’s is always relaxed and friendly. I never feel rushed, even on a Saturday morning. Tables, and space, are limited – this is a Grade II listed building – but they extend into the garden outside during the warmer weather. I tend to visit ‘off peak’, so have never failed to find an available table.
It was delicious and a lovely, unexpected, treat (I am actually on a diet!) I didn’t feel remotely guilty though, but did make sure I hit my 10,000 step daily challenge. I don’t get many opportunities to chill out with Millie-Mae – I tend to either have both children or Huw is with us too. So these grabbed moments are precious, especially as she’s growing up so quickly with such a hectic social life I struggle to keep up with her. I couldn’t have picked a better venue for our breakfast, and I recommend that you all make a visit when you are in, or close to, Hitchin town centre. It gets a definite 10 out of 10 from us.
Of course Chilli B’s has a lunch menu too … will need to write a new review for this as I’ve only ever visited for breakfast! Watch this space 🙂
