I used to have a Samsung S6, but I felt like a change and upgraded to a Google Pixel 2 phone – which I like a lot. But I was also rather taken by the Samsung S9, especially when considering the hype surrounding it’s superior camera. So when I had the opportunity to try a S9+ on loan with Three, I jumped at the chance.
Samsung has produced another winner. It’s S9+ is a fantastic phone. I loved using it and the new 12mp low-light camera is particularly good. The phone has a good feel and it is very easy to use. The S9+ has dimensions of 158.1 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm. It has an oversized 6.2-inch curved screen, which makes using the camera a dream as it is so easy to focus. All of the apps and phone functions were easy to use and the android interface is the best for mobile phones (in my opinion). The phone also looks good with its dual glass panel and minimal metal bezel design.
The Galaxy S9+ is equipped with a low-light-defeating 12MP dual-lens camera. The camera is the first to have a f/1.5 maximum wide aperture to let a lot more light in. The S9+ also has an 8MP rear dual-lens camera. The S9+ primary lens can capture super-slow-motion video at 960 frames per second. This produced some fabulous footage of a go-cart race. The 8MP front-facing camera can be used for some novelty stuff such as painting your face with AR Emoji props and masks!
The main ‘test’ for the phone was a 2-night media cruise on a new cruise ship. Here’s a couple of the photos I took with the Samsung S9+
The Fingerprint Sensor
Although I am not a great fan of fingerprint sensors Samsung has made the one on the S9+ much more convenient. Samsung has listened and moved its offset rear fingerprint sensor to a more central position. This is more natural to use. However, there is the option of face unlock and iris scanning onboard as well.
Ease of Use
The phone was very easy to use and it is nice to see that Samsung has given the S9+ stereo speakers for superior sound. The phone also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, unlike my Pixel 2, and so it is much more convenient to listen to music. Also, there is a microSD card slot to expand the memory if you want right up to 400Gb! There is a 128Gb internal memory, which under normal circumstances is fine for all your e-books, pictures and music. The Super AMOLED 18.5:9 panel is fabulous. The Quad HD+ resolution at 529ppi is pin sharp and brings fantastically vibrant colours and a high contrast so that images, games and media come alive.
I used the phone for three weeks as my primary mobile phone with Three.co.uk. I loved the new 12MP camera and I thought it took images that were far superior to my Pixel 2. The phone transferred and stored all my e-books and MP3 files and I actually loved the opportunity to use my brand-new ear phones without having to find a USB C adapter. It’s a cracking phone. One of the best. And I can recommend either the S9+ or its baby brother to anyone looking to upgrade.
