It started just like any normal day. Shower, dressed, coffee, watch the news … there were no clues that it would be a day that we’d never forget. Or be allowed to. The doorbell rang. Nothing new, I get lots of parcels. But this one looked different. I made a new coffee while I studied the outside of the box. The kids came into the room – I wanted others around, back up even, to watch the unboxing.
With care, and trepidation, we tore open the box. Nothing really could have prepared us for what we found. Hideous? Scary? Just darn right odd …? All of these. But more a kind of ‘what on earth?’ Definitely a monster of some sort. And a monster with friends – he had a photo of all his ‘friends’ in the box with him. But the first thing you see are the teeth. Perfect, white teeth. Clearly looked after gnashers – and then I noticed his toothbrush and toothpaste. He clearly has a good dental routine.
We found a t-shirt with one of his friends emblazoned across the front. However, what worried us the most was the roll of ‘no access/crime scene’ tape he arrived with. Was he dangerous? What do we do with him? What is he? There was adoption paperwork too … this ‘thing’ was now ours to keep. Perhaps a puppy would have been a better option …
Getting to know Freddy
Once we took Freddy out of his travel box, we realised that he can communicate with us. No idea how, but he manages to transfer his thoughts into your head. So, we started to talk to him – we had SO many questions.
Freddy is a Fuggler; a funny-ugly monster that is mischievous and quite weird. Freddy told us that he earned a living as a horror/thriller actor … hence the promotional t-shirt, as his friends are also ‘in the biz’. He was in the UK to launch his new movie, the trailer of which can be seen here:
Freddy told us that he needed a family, and he’d picked us. However, he didn’t need parenting, just a base for when he’s not on location, or travelling. You see Freddy uses his movie earnings to travel the world. As a thank you for adopting him (like we had any option?), he’d booked for us all to go to Dubai – a place he was keen to tick off his travel wish list. Not one to turn down a free holiday, it didn’t take us long to pack, and off we went.
He decided to travel in the suitcase – his favourite place as he could sleep flat all the way. So, we travelled alone, in economy, wondering what the following days had in store.
Well, it soon became apparent that Freddy was a definite head turner. Everywhere we went, people stared at him … they ran from him … they seemed rather concerned for us being with him. He became an Instagram hit – photos appearing of him At The Top of the Burj Khalifa …
… the Dubai Museum …
… on a Desert Safari …
Everywhere we went, he drew a crowd. No wonder he’d done so well in the movie industry!
Our return flight was Premium Economy – because of the additional legroom, he decided to fly home in the cabin with us …
Well since we’ve been back from Dubai Freddy has pretty much slept constantly. He wakes only to clean his teeth and to WhatsApp his weird movie-star friends. He starts filming on location in October, somewhere in Romania, but hopes to be back here for Halloween. Freddy’s not seen much of Europe, so he’s hoping to visit some Christmas markets once his film wraps. Fingers crossed he wants to take us with him again (now we’re family)!
Living with a Fuggler
It’s not so bad, to be honest. He sleeps – a lot. We hear the occasional shuffle as he heads to the bathroom to clean his teeth. He’s kinda addicted to his tablet – YouTube videos and games with ‘in-app purchases’ seem to be his thing (thank goodness he’s on a good salary). There’s talk that his friends might join us all for Christmas Day this year – that’s if he doesn’t accept an invite he has to Necker Island (been twice, feels a bit ‘samey’ apparently). So, we’ll see – watch this space!
Through the grapevine I’ve heard that his friends are currently picking out their own adopted families … be careful what you sign for when the delivery man calls. Or you could be brave, and pick one yourself (if you’re crazy!) Take a look here and pick your monster!
(And good luck!)
