Sleepless long-haul flights can spoil the start to your vacation. With just a few tricks you can sleep better on the plane – and you will arrive rested at your destination.
You already have the prerequisites for a relaxing flight before you board the plane. Plan the itinerary so that you arrive at the airport in good time. Avoid unnecessary time pressure at check-in or the security check – Stress is one of the biggest sleep killers.
Sleep can be positively influenced by the choice of seating location
By the window, you do not have to make way for your neighbours if they need to go to the bathroom. The ability to lean your head against the wall of the aircraft also helps many people to sleep better.
Comfortably fall asleep in the plane
If there is already little space, tight clothes make it even more difficult to sit down comfortably or even relax. So instead of appearing with tight jeans or in a full suit, you should instead choose comfortable clothing for your flight. Also, sweatpants and oversize sweaters reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis in flights lasting several hours, as the legs are circulated with blood.
However, those of you who already suffer from thrombosis should not forget their support stockings. Otherwise, fluid quickly accumulates in the legs.
Also, think of earplugs and a sleep mask
Darkness and tranquility are a rarity on a flight. When everything around you buzzes and rumbles, you will wake up all too soon. Even a slight nod of the head can tear you away from sleep. If you could not get a window seat, you should, therefore, have a neck pillow in your hand luggage.
If you do not want to be disturbed by the flight attendants or be bothered by the chatty neighbour, you should just switch off – and listen to good music. Pop in those earplugs – you will quickly drift off to the land of dreams.

Sleep better, despite the flight attendants
Not infrequently, it is the flight attendants who wake you up, even though you would only like to have your peace and quiet. This you can prevent: If you’re strapped in you do not have to worry about being awakened during turbulence in order to put your belt back on. If you do not want to eat your meal on the plane, it is best to let the flight attendants know in advance.
Do not drink coffee or alcohol
If you want to fall asleep quickly, then you better not drink coffee on the flight. The same is also valid for alcohol.
Have the urge to splurge if you can
Even if you have to spend a little more money, it’s worth it to travel in business or first class. Airlines offer premium comfort that is perfect. However, they also know that they can charge more for these extras. It does make sense to indulge in first or business class – if you can afford it.
If that does not work, you can still pay a little extra to at least get a seat with lots of legroom. Mostly, you can already add this option when booking.
