Welcome to the ‘About Us’ section of PackThePJs. This is the place to learn more about the individuals behind the website, and why we do what we do.
Why PackThePJs you may ask? Well, simply put, my family love to travel; my husband Huw and I used to be journalists covering both the cruise and hotel industries. In 2015, while on a pre-inaugural media cruise, we spotted a new market trend towards families taking cruise holidays, and cruise lines designing ‘family friendly’ ships… so we set up KidzCruises to focus on this specific sector of the cruise industry. Our children are 11 (2006 born) and 9 years old (2008) – they have been on cruises with us before, so the topic was one we were all very interested in.
But as with all websites, over time you diversify and head in directions you hadn’t initially intended. With KidzCruises this happened after joining the Parent Blogging and Family Travel Blogging communities. These connections led to opportunities for us, as a family, to experience events, activities, and land (as well as water)-based breaks and holidays. We also find it great fun to review toys, gadgets and gifts … all items that are of interest to our main audience of course (that being UK-based parents). As a result of this widened focus to encompass everything ‘family travel’, we relaunched our blog as PackThePJs in February 2017.
We are truly a ‘family collaborative blog’. We all contribute to the website. Tracey writes the main posts for PackThePJs and KidzCruises, while Huw contributes through his Huw Knew? ‘techie dad’ page, and the children through their KidzPlay area. Our first website, back in 2005, focused on cafes/tea shops. Over the years this has been neglected, but we’ve brought it back to life with the new BestCuppa page here on PackThePJs. We are very excited to grow and develop every page on PackThePJs.
More About Us
“Hello, I am Tracey: Mum, Wife, Writer and Blogger”
“I’m Huw: Dad, Husband, Technology Journalist, and Scientist”
I once had dark hair, but I blame the children for the ‘silver fox’ look I now sport! I am a science, medical and technology writer and I work mainly from our home office in the garden. I have a PhD in Chemistry and was very nearly a dentist. When not tapping away on my computer, I’m kept busy being the local Cubs Leader and assistant Leader to the Beavers pack. I love to travel and am a bit of a gadget geek at heart!
My parents call me Millicent Mayhem. I am 11, but am really tall with HUGE feet (nearly adult size 9!) I’m not really a ‘girly girl’. I spend a lot of my spare time playing on my phone, tablet, console, and laptop: Minecraft, Roblox, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Goat Simulator are my current favourites – and Pokemon Go is the best! I love all animals (especially horses), dragons, the colour purple and all types of chocolate. I am a St John’s Ambulance Cadet, I do karate and netball and love horse-riding when I get a chance. I also sing in three local youth choirs and have singing lessons. I’m also learning to play the guitar.
I am The Tobster and I am 9 years old. I love Nerf guns and can’t wait for the TerraScout to come to the UK. I like Coca Cola, Skittles, McDonalds and pizza … but I’m very active! I have been learning fencing for nearly two years, karate for over 3 years and golf for 5 years. I’m also a Cub Scout. I want to be a pirate when I grow up – or a chef – though preferably both. White chocolate is my favourite treat and I chill out by playing on my tablet. I want mum and dad to buy me a Lamborghini when they win the Lottery.
“We’re Izzy and Jack: Dogs, Pets, English Springer Spaniels, Lovable, Mad”
Jack and Izzy are our fully-passported, totally mental, English Springer Spaniels. Izzy is 5, Jack 3. A total handful at the best of times! They love a good walk: Jack could challenge any greyhound in a 100m sprint, while Izzy will always sniff out a discarded tennis ball wherever she is. When at home they love to sleep – and they love to create an almighty racket whenever the doorbell rings … They’ve travelled with us throughout Europe, when we’ve gone on road trips. They’ve paddled in the Med when we drove to Spain; sniffed lampposts in Hamburg, Warsaw, Krakow and all over Latvia and Lithuania; have overnight ferried (in a cabin) while cruising up the Baltic; played in the snow in the French Alps; barked at caravanning neighbours in Brittany and the Loire Valley; been through the Eurotunnel many times – they are truly international spaniels! They’ve holidayed all over England and Scotland with us too, and love running around the beaches of the Gower Peninsula in Wales.
Completing the family, we have Supercat Roddy and Princess Rita – they look after the house when we’re not at home … and they keep the dogs in check!
