BBQ Safely using a Thermapen 4 Thermometer
With barbecue season upon us, I want to explain how a Thermapen could save you from food poisoning (or at the very least a nasty upset tummy). We all know that every man in the UK is a BBQ expert! I’m the same – the outside grill is MY domain! Maybe it has something to do with primeval instinct and the smell of cooking fires or something? There are two important points to consider when BBQ-ing:
- Is your fire (gas or charcoal) too hot? If it is the food may caramelise (polite way of saying ‘burn’) rapidly on the outside and look cooked.
- How can you tell if your food is thoroughly cooked?
The only sure-fire way of telling if something is cooked is to use a meat thermometer. A great example of one we’ve tried is the Thermapen 4. A thermometer is the only accessory you need to stop you from wimping out and taking food off to the oven to ‘make sure’ it’s cooked! Just whip out your Thermapen and probe the meat. Ooh err Missus! Actually, I was taught how to use the Thermapen on a recent ‘BBQ Masterclass’. You can read all about it here. For sausages and burgers and chicken you are looking for an inside temperature of 75°C at least.
Seventy Five To Stay Alive is an easy way to remember
For medium rare steaks (55-60°C) and rare steaks a temperature of between 50 and 55°C is fine.
The Thermapen 4 is a fantastic, light-weight and portable BBQ tool. It comes in ten colours, can take a reading in three seconds flat, is fully waterproof and can be used in right handed or left-handed operation. It can measure temperatures between -49.9 and 299°C and most importantly is made in the UK by Electronic Temperature Instruments Ltd, a well-established and trusted manufacturer of temperature probes.
A fast-reading thermometer, like the Thermapen, can probably help save your BBQ this Summer – even help you make jam in the Autumn! We’ve used it every single weekend when visiting our caravan at Long Beach Campsite, Norfolk.

Disclaimer for BBQ Safely using a Thermapen 4 Thermometer
We received a Thermapen as a gift while attending a recent BBQ Masterclass in London. We really like it, and this review contains only our opinions of the item.
