Young at Heart: My Very Own Scalextric Street Racers Set

I love Scalextric. I was 12 when I last had a set to call my own … and that was a long (long) time ago. Well, the opportunity came about for ME (not the kids) to review a Scalextric Street Racers set. I wasn’t going to say no now was I?!

Scalextric Street Racers

The Scalextric Street Racers set, that arrived late one Saturday evening, is a good starter set with an age guidance of 5+. It takes around three minutes flat to set up straight from the box. (This is good to know ahead of Christmas Day.) If you are lucky enough to receive one from Santa this year, you are sure to have hours of fun.

The set includes two GT anime drifter cars (GT Sunrise and GT Sunset) to go one-on-one with over four metres of track. The track can actually be set up in four different layout options and there is a lap counter for competitions. These cars are fun, fast and tough and really robust.

A long and rough race over 25 laps was a real blast. Aside from some close calls with cars spinning off on sharp corners, a slot racing session with my brother-in-law was brilliant. Seriously, I had forgotten how much fun Scalextric was!

The Kids Have a Go …

There’s no way that I could keep this delight secret from the kids – for a start they saw the box the morning after it arrived. And the whizzing noise of the cars speeding around the track is hardly conducive to a top-secret hobby … So, with some initial reservations, I let them have a go.

Needless to say, they both loved it – and were both better than me, tsk. They loved the urban designs on the cars – much street cred!

However, I made sure they knew that it was MY set, not theirs!

The Future

I am a born-again Scalextric slot racing enthusiast and it’s all due to the enthusiasm reborn from the Street Racers set. Plans are now forming in my head to build a bigger track out in the garage. I have already been in the attic to dig out my old cars and see if they will run on the track and hey, guess what? I found some old track from one of my childhood Scalextric sets! So here goes to build the mega track! I’m thinking a fifteen-metre track for a real racing challenge … maybe invite some of the local dads around (the garage fridge is full of beer!)

As a Cub Scouts leader, I’m also going to put forward the idea of having a ‘mega track’ session over winter with the kids. Well, I’ve got the Scalextric bug now!
