Selfie Mic: Star in your own music video! Selfie Mic was a ‘must review’ by my 10 year old daughter, who has her own mobile phone and LOVES to sing.
The Selfie Mic Selfie Stick and Microphone was a ‘must review’ by my 10 year old daughter, who has her own mobile phone and LOVES to sing. It was clearly designed just for her! Actually, rewind a little. My daughter has an amazing voice – she’ll stand on a stage and sing to an audience with no worries, but around the house she gets very self-conscious of people listening to her. When I saw the Selfie Mic I thought that, because it looks fun and works alongside her beloved iPhone, it might help build her off-stage confidence a little.
It worked! It was a bit fiddly to set up as the grip that holds the mobile phone is tight, so it took one person to prize the jaws of the holder open, and another to place the mobile phone (or maybe we’re just weak!) You download the StarMaker app from the App Store and sign up with a user name, and then you get to scroll through and search for a favourite song. You then select what kind of song it is (pop, alternative, folk, punk etc), place the earpiece behind your ear (this is also a little fiddly to do) and then, while holding the Selfie Mic in a position where you can see yourself on the phone screen, press ‘Play’.
My daughter said that it took a lot of getting used to. The music in the songs she chose to sing seemed to have faster tempo than when she sings them, say, in her choir. So she had to ‘teach herself’ to sing faster, in time with the music that was playing into the earpiece in her ear. The earpiece, by the way, kept falling out. The songs she sang only had one verse and chorus too, so not a whole song – a bit irritating as you just get into a song, when it then comes to an end! Once you’ve finished your song you get the option to save it, make it public, and share to social media.
But, even when taking the minor niggles into account, my daughter has set it up a few times since and I’ve caught her having a bit of a sing-a-long! My 8 year old son would have tried it too, but the Selfie Mic is pink … he hates, and won’t go near anything that’s pink!
The Selfie Mic Selfie Stick and Microphone is a great stocking filler for a teenage girl (teenage boy too if available in a non-pink colour). It is good fun, and something new that you can do with your smartphone phone.
