Zippo Pink Hand Warmer

When I was asked if I’d like to review a hand warmer by the famous Zippo brand, I had one thought in mind – my mum. Mum suffers from a combination of Raynaud’s and Scleroderma; this basically means her hands are always incredibly cold. She wears gloves (often more than one pair at once) all the time, and uses battery/chargeable hand warmers daily – so if anyone could provide a genuine review of this product, it was her.

The first impression is a good one – the hand warmer looks sturdy, isn’t overly heavy and is the perfect ‘palm’ size. What makes this hand warmer different from all the others that my mum has used is that this one uses lighter fuel rather than a battery. You get a teeny plastic Jerry can in the box, and you fill this with lighter fuel to then pour into the hand warmer. One fill should give up to 6 hours of warmth. This process was very straightforward – no lighter fuel was spilled. Because it was the first time the hand warmer had been used, the comprehensive instructions did advise us that we might need to wait for the fluid to be soaked into the wick – so we gave it 10 minutes.

My dad then put a match to the hand warmer … but if we’re honest we weren’t sure what would happen! There was no flame – no indication that we’d done it right. So we used 2-3 matches and with nothing obvious happening we walked away for 5 minutes in case the wick had still not drawn up the fluid. When we returned, it was really warm 🙂 I guess that’s the only negative with this hand warmer – you’re never really sure that you’ve lit it correctly, until the unit warms up.

At this point of the review I hand over to my mum … Overall she was very impressed with the Zippo hand warmer. She said that it was a ‘good heat’, not too hot and not too tepid. A huge plus to her was that the Zippo hand warmer is warm on both sides – all the battery ones she has only have one warm side, so when she wraps her hand around this one, the whole hand benefits. We filled the mini Jerry can to the fill level, and this did indeed keep the unit producing a nice heat for 6 hours.

You cannot turn the Zippo hand warmer off – once ignited it will remain warm until the lighter fluid has been used up.

A relative happened to turn up mid-review, and he said that he has two Zippo hand warmers for when he plays golf (which is pretty much every day at dawn – he’s mad like that!) He turned his back on battery/chargeable hand warmers in preference to these fluid-fuelled Zippo ones as they performed better. Although he wasn’t particularly taken by the lovely pink colour, he as very impressed with the size of this hand warmer (his are larger as they hold more fuel so are warmer for even longer).

My mum has put a second one of these on her Christmas list … so that tells you what she thinks about it 🙂 A definite hit, and a product that will certainly help her manage her Raynaud’s and Scleroderma symptoms. And to think I had plans to use it while out Trick or Treating with the kids next week and at this year’s local Firework display! Oh well!
