The south of France is such an amazing region with beautiful weather, rich history and plenty of great cities to visit. You’re never going to do it all in one trip. If you’re going for the first time, Cannes is probably the best place to go. It’s an incredible city that gives you a good introduction to the region. There’s a lot going on in Cannes and if you’re only going for a short trip, you’ll have to use your time well. These are the must-see activities and attractions in Cannes.
Musee de la Castre
The south of France is popular for so many different reasons but one of the best things about it is the amazing historical monuments you’ll find there. In Cannes, there is one that everybody visits while they’re there. The Musee de la Castre. This beautiful gothic chateau, built by monks in the 11th century has since been turned into a great museum. A lot of the big museums you go to these days have changed a lot under the influence of tourism but that’s not the case at the Musee de la Castre. Inside, you’ll find some great collections of impressionist artwork as well as historical artefacts from the region. It’s open all year around and it’s not that expensive at all so it’s a must while you’re in Cannes.
Hire A Yacht
The coast in the south of France is so beautiful and the best way to see it is from the water. There are plenty of places for yacht rental in France, especially along the south coast. You can rent one for the day and spend some time exploring the coast or, if you’re in the region for a while, you can hire one for the week. If you want to see a couple of different locations in the area after you leave Cannes, renting a yacht is the best way to do it.
Cannes Film Festival
Cannes is best known for the legendary film festival that they hold there each spring so you might want to time your visit to coincide with it. The festival itself is a private one so if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of some of your favourite actors, you might be disappointed. However, there are a lot of other events on around the festival to entertain the tourists that flock to the area when it’s on.
Rue d’Antibes
If you love a bit of retail therapy, you’re in the right place. Head over to Rue d’Antibes to find all of the designer shops you could ever want. This stretch of road, a couple of blocks inland, is home to some of the most famous designers in the world. Just remember that it’s going to be expensive to buy anything. Even if you aren’t that bothered about the shopping, it’s still worth heading down there because there are plenty of great cafes and bakeries where you can stop for a bite to eat.
You’re never going to fit everything in on your first trip to Cannes but these are the highlights you should hit.
