Brazilian Iral: A Whole New Jewellery Concept

What is an Iral? Good question, and one that I admit I googled for a definition. They are made in Brazil, but I wasn’t sure if they were an ancient tradition, or a whole new jewellery type. I ‘think’, from my research, that they are in fact a brand new jewellery that will change your holiday outfit planning for ever! KidzCruises were sent two Irals to review, and we chose two ‘nautical’ themed ones because we feel they’ll be EXCELLENT on our next cruise adventure … we picked a Starfish Iral and a Crab Iral.

So, what is an Iral – I’ve still not explained! Well, it’s a brooch – quite blingy brooch – that has no pin. Instead it has a spiral stalk that you wind around whatever you are attaching it to. Let me explain a bit more. Think of a flip flop – the strappy ones that feed down to a single post between your toes. Well these straps are perfect for Irals. You simply wind them on and they are very secure. Another example – a strappy holiday/summer dress … there’s nowhere to add a traditional pin brooch, but with the shoulder straps holding the dress up, there’s a perfect place to add an Iral. Of course the bikini is another perfect option.

Ok, I accept that we’re in the throes of winter here in the UK and the thought of strappy dresses, flip flops and bikinis are a distant dream for a lot of us … but that’s the great thing about Irals – as long as there is something to attach them to, you can wear them all year around. A bag strap. A buckle/strap on your shoes/boots. A band on your hat … use your imagination! Attach them to your bra strap if you feel adventurous! I’m not quite as brave (or brazen) for that, so I wore mine on my handbag shoulder strap. It gave focus to what would ordinarily be a functional, but boring, strap. And to reiterate, it stayed in place all evening. The spiral nature of the stalk ensures a tight hold.

My seaside Crab Iral and Starfish Iral are safely put away in readiness for a surprise holiday to the Maldives, or an exotic cruise in some tropical clime … I hope to be wearing them lots over the coming months!
