DVD Review: The Legend of Tarzan [2016]

We did not view The Legend of Tarzan in a cinema, but instead were kindly sent the DVD to review. We therefore arranged a lovely family film night, complete with popcorn, hot chocolate, cosy blankets and PJs! Unlike my husband, I only ‘know’ about Tarzan through hearsay – I’ve never seen any previous films or read the books (whereas he has), so I don’t really have any knowledge to say whether the story was true to the original or not. So I can only judge this film as a standalone movie – and the honest truth is that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What I liked about this film is that every now and again Tarzan had ‘flashbacks’, which explained (for those with no prior knowledge), the story of how Tarzan came to be raised by apes and how he met Jane. This film is set in the current day, where Tarzan is living as Lord Greystoke and is lured back to the jungle in an attempt to discover if slavery and corruption abound in the Congo. But of course, as with all movies, there’s a lot more to it than that. There’s a fabulous baddy in Leon Rom, who is unbelievably creepy at times!

I loved the CGI of the apes. The scenery was beautiful and the special effects were really good. As I watched the movie (in 2D) I could pinpoint the moments where things would ‘jump out the screen’ if in 3D. I’d actually like to watch this in 3D as it would definitely add a new edge to it.

Overall, The Legend of Tarzan is good, honest, family viewing. Yes, Tarzan really does swing from tree to tree on vine ropes – this had to be in the film (wouldn’t be Tarzan without it!) Both children watched it from beginning to end; my daughter loved the apes and didn’t like it when any of them got hurt … whereas my son loved it when the apes and Tarzan launched themselves off a cliff into the jungle below.

The Legend of Tarzan is a definite ‘must watch’ for any family film nights. Just don’t forget the popcorn and hot chocolate!
