Heat Holder Thermal Socks for Kids

Heat Holders kindly sent us two pairs of children’s socks to review – a vivid pink pair (size 4-8) and a striped blue pair for size 12.5-3.5. These were a perfect fit for my daughter and son, who have feet size 6 and 1 respectively. The socks are nicely presented in a cardboard wrap and our first impression is that the socks are really soft and fluffy on the inside.

The socks have a TOG rating of 2.5 and of course the toughest part of this review was finding somewhere cold, in the middle of August, to ‘test’ these socks out … typically, this is the year we have a mini-heatwave when I’d have appreciated a snowstorm!

The children wore them first around the house … my son was particularly taken by the anti-slip pads on the bottom of his pair … and my daughter (whose socks had no anti-slip) was showing off how far she could slide on the wooden floor in the hall! They both liked wearing them, commenting that they are lovely and soft. But yes, after 45 mins they both took them off because their feet were too hot.

I then had a brainwave, thanks to the local weatherman who said we stood a good chance of seeing the Perseid meteor shower that night but that it would be a bit chilly out … brilliant! We were off sky watching! It was getting ready to leave the house when the only negative comment was made about the socks – because they are really thick, it’s difficult to wear them under trainer-like shoes. However they will be perfect paired with wellingtons or snow boots etc.

We got to the top of the local hill and I got the children to lay on the grass and stare at the sky … and this is pretty much where we stayed for over an hour. Yes, it certainly got chilly – I was ready to head home when the time came! Now, my children feel the cold and they moan and whine all the time that they are ‘freezing’ or ‘boiling’ (always extremes!) But on this night, they said nothing about their feet … cold hands yes, and heads/faces – but the feet remained fine. Result! Oh, we saw a few shooting stars – not sure about the meteors (I wasn’t totally convinced I knew what I was looking at!)

When we got home and stripped off our coats and shoes, I asked them how their feet were. The answer was “really warm, toasty – bit hot now though after the long walk home” (it was 200 yards!)

If we get snow this year, these socks will be worth their weight in gold. If we’re ever lucky enough to go to Lapland to see Santa, or dare I say a cruise to Antarctica or Alaska … these socks will ensure that feet stay warm.
