Review: Meccano Huracan Spyder by Spin Master

Huw remembers Meccano from his younger days (wow, it must have been around for, like, ever!) He had a treasured ‘box of bits’ from which to make his own creations. So when we had the chance to build a Meccano Lamborghini, we all jumped at the chance. Of course it was predominantly for the children, but try telling their father that!

When the box arrived you instantly see the number 259. Yep, there’s two hundred and fifty nine pieces in the box, but once assembled correctly builds a brilliant blue Lamborghini Huracan Spyder. The kit is designed for the 10+ age range. Our 10 year old helped sort out the pieces, but the actual assembly was too fiddly for her.

Inside the box you find a very comprehensive instruction booklet, along with several bags of pieces. In one of the bags was a screwdriver and a spanner, meaning you could build straight from the box with no extra tools needed.

Job 1 is to sort all the pieces as many of them look really similar. Especially the screws as several were so similar in length it was really important to have them set out in size order. Our son and daughter sorted all the pieces, while Huw studied the instruction booklet.

The instructions were good – but a couple of times he found ‘too much going on’ in a single step, so it was confusing. It was very fiddly. At times it was difficult to pick up the thread of a screw by the teeny tiny nut, especially when in an awkward to reach position. Perseverance pays off though and in just under 3 hours the car was fully built.

In honesty I can’t see my 10 year old having the patience to build the car on her own. However she actively helped Huw by looking ahead at the next step and sorting the pieces needed to complete it. It’s definitely a teamwork kit – in this household anyway!

The finished car was given to our 8 year old son and it is proudly on display in his bedroom. He loves Lamborghinis, so it’s his current pride and joy!
