Sky Spinner by Wicked
“Wow – did you see that! I caught it mid air. This is so cool”
Hours of fun! We’ve seriously had a LOT of fun playing with and reviewing the Sky Spinner from Wicked. Toby (7) was really enthusiastic when he was given the box – he’s very much into ‘cool tricks’ at the moment and this is what the packaging promised in heaps. To an adult it looks like a frisbee, but when you examine it closer it’s very tough and more like one of those trick plates that you spin on sticks … so our summing up is that the Sky Spinner is a spinning plate Frisbee!
So, how did we get on? Remembering here that Toby is seven and is still pretty hopeless at catching anything! We therefore started with the basics – throwing (and catching) the Sky Spinner, like a Frisbee. Hand on heart, I thought he’d lose interest in a couple of minutes – but no, he was determined to throw it straight and then catch it. And he did! He was so proud of himself and we were all laughing and smiling playing a family game of catch the Frisbee. Proper outdoor play. Not an electronic gadget in sight.
Now on to the tricks … the instructions (there are some really thorough instructions printed on the inside of the packaging sleeve) told us to start by learning the ‘fist spin’. Toby took a while to master this, he got the balance sussed, but just couldn’t spin it without sending the Sky Spinner flying off towards the ground! But what was really nice to see is that he carried on trying, and yes, he ‘got it’ and was really happy. We all had a go, and us ‘oldies’ managed the finger spinning – but as for spinning the disk from the finger on one hand to a finger on the other … well, we’re still trying that one! And we’ve yet to get close to the spin speeds suggested on the packaging, but it’s early days!
From a parent, what is good about the Sky Spinner is that it’s relatively inexpensive at RRP £10, it’s tough so will last, and portable so can be stashed easily in a daysack. Overall it’s a great way to do something outside with the kids that’s fun and ‘cool’.
