Tails.com is a subscription-based online pet food business where you receive custom-made and measured dog food, specific to your dog. The food is 100% complete and balanced, and you even get a measuring cup with advice on how much to give your dog to maintain a healthy weight.
Normally I am sceptical about the quality of dog food. I have heard alarming stories about certain cheap brands being made from poor ingredients and that I must be weary of coloured kibbles as these are just allergy-inducing colour additives and not full of the health-giving properties you are lead to believe. Izzy and Jack, my English Springer Spaniels (pets, not working dogs, though they do run a lot) have tried a range of dry and wet food during their lives – everything from the really expensive ‘superior’ brands, down to bland budget ones … the two extremes gave them bad bellies, sore and itchy skin (and one caused the most awful gas!) So we’ve found, by trial and error that ‘middle-ranking’ brands suit my dogs the best. However, both dogs do have a habit of getting bored with their food, so when an opportunity came along to trial Tails.com, I knew they’d be up for it!
The Tails.com setting up process is very straightforward – for each dog you are asked various questions about their breed, their weight, gender and if they’ve been neutered, activity levels, food preferences, allergies etc. From the given information the software calculates the best blend of kibble for your dog, along with the amount to be fed each mealtime. This setting up takes a couple of minutes – five at the most. You then sit back and await your delivery!
Delivery was prompt and we were kept informed of the parcel’s whereabouts by the courier. Jack and Izzy received a month’s supply – Jack, a slightly heavier dog, got two sacks of food, to (poor) Izzy’s one … The food bags had their names on, so there was no mistaking which one belonged to which dog. In the box were two flatpacked measuring scoops with instructions on how much to feed each mealtime.
Both dogs loved it! They ate it with enthusiasm and it certainly gave them sufficient energy to live up to their mad reputation. Their coats became much shinier and their eyes brighter during the course of the trial. We also noticed that their teeth became noticeably cleaner with fresher breath. The Tails.com food didn’t cause Izzy to itch/scratch like she does with some premium food brands, and overall the food seemed to suit them well.
We have friends with dogs (ranging from guinea-pig sized Chihuahuas to miniature pony-sized German Shepherds) – their dogs are fed on Tails.com now. Several of these dogs are prone to allergies, but since trying out Tails.com they now appear allergy-free.
Of course dry kibble isn’t the entire Tails.com range. They also have puppy food, their own range of wet food, and chew treats to help keep their teeth healthy.
Tails.com certainly appears to suit Izzy and Jack. They both eat the food without any hesitation. They’ve had no bad bellies or itchiness and indeed look very shiny and bright. The cost of Tails.com is comparable with their ‘usual’ food, so we are considering continuing with Tails.com after the trial ends.
We certainly recommend you trying Tails.com for your pet dog; the quality is borne out by the obvious improved health and vigour.
