The Ringer Hoop-La Game by Hape

The Ringer, by one of our favourite brands Hape, was sent to us to review. The Ringer is a sort of hoop-la game … We decided to call upon our friend’s son George, a very exactly and hard to please 3 year old, for his expert opinion.

We set The Hape Ringer up in the middle of the living room, and George’s mum and I settled down for a cup of tea, biscuit and a catch up. During all the ‘mum talk’ George conducted some field testing on The Ringer. He seemed to deal with it logically and soon worked out the object of the game. George became and expert very quickly and was able to throw a ring over a peg from about 1.5 to 2 metres away. After each successful hoop-la he put both arms in the air and ran around the coffee table like he’d just scored the winning goal in a football match! It was lovely to watch.

The Hape Ringer is a curved piece of wood with four pegs sticking out of it at an angle. The idea is to throw rope hoops over the pegs and score points. Each peg has a different point score related to difficulty. The hoops are also colour-coded, so we said that if the hoop matched the peg you’d earn double points. George had to get us to add up the scores, but he knew what he needed to do and soon worked out which pegs earned the most points.

As with all Hape toys, The Ringer is a well-made Swiss-designed wooden toy that will provide hours of fun. George beat both me and his mum hands down, and repeatedly, and he took it home so he could take on his dad! I think we might have a champion in the making. The Ringer is brilliant at developing hand eye coordination and competitive instincts giving a great grounding for other games later on 🙂
