Some parents run a business while travelling the world and others are self-employed, but if you get offered a job in another country or location, it’s so easy to think that the perks of the job will outweigh any of the negative aspects. But when you are a parent, and you are uprooting your family to another location, it’s so important to think about some of the big emotional issues you and your children could face.
Intense Emotions
When you have a good day, it is great, but when your children feel so far away from everything they know, it can feel much worse, and the sensation intensifies. When you live in another country, you can feel almost on edge in comparison to how you are at home. Therefore, your emotions will be somewhat stronger. And when we are moving to another country for a job, we’ve got to get into that work frame of mind. We could very well be excellent at our job, and be so good that the employer offers to put their name to our sponsor licence so we could stay, but if our children and we still feel that uneasiness inside, will it be worth it?
There Will Be Big Decisions
In fact, you will be making big life-changing decisions more or in your time overseas than you ever would at home. There’s not just the red tape, such as applying for visas, or even the finances, but the overwhelming feeling of having to make many choices can be too much to bear. When you take into account that you are making decisions for yourself and your children, it can be overwhelming, especially given the “alien” environment.
Is Uncertainty Good for Your Children (and Yourself)?
When you live in another country, you can plan everything to the Nth degree, but when you are on a 2-year visa, you may not ever feel settled. Therefore, you would have to make your children feel as settled as possible, even though you may not. And you have to ask yourself if you can live with this level of uncertainty? Visas come to an end, and contracts could run out. If you move to another country, but you have no idea where you will be one year from now, how will this feel for you and your children?
What Will it Be Like When You Go Home?
Of course, you could choose to stay where you are, and it could be scary moving away from everything, even if it’s for the benefit of everyone. However, it’s important to point out that life will move at a much slower pace at home than it does when you are in another country. You will notice that not many things change, save a few houses popping up. But home will always be there if you decide to pack up and return.
There’s a lot to think about as a parent, but also as someone who wants to live a better life. Another country provides a lot of new possibilities, but it can also bring up a lot of anxieties as well.
