Today, Toby and I were lucky enough to be invited to a pre-launch showing of DreamWorks Animation’s new film The Boss Baby. The screening took place in a rather special, though apt, setting – KidZania, in the Westfield Shopping Centre, Shepherd’s Bush, London.
For an hour before the film began at the nearby Vue Cinema, the children were invited into KidZania to sample what’s on offer in this wonderful kids’ city. During this hour, Toby and his friend became pit lane mechanics with Renault and experienced changing tyres at record speed! What’s more, they got paid Kidzos’ for taking part (their own currency that they cash in at the end to buy food, souvenirs etc.). They also joined the British Airways pilot training academy (they had to pay 10 Kidzos each to do this). They really looked the part dressed in their pilot clothes, but we can only guess as to how well they flew the plane as this took place away from us parents! KidZania was definitely a hit, and we’ll definitely be making a date to spend a full session there very soon.
The Boss Baby screening took place in 3D at the Vue cinema within Westfield London. Comfortably seated with our popcorn and refreshments, the film started with a really funny trailer for another upcoming film, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul … there’s a seagull-related clip that had the whole theatre laughing. And then the main feature film began …
I don’t want to give the plot away, obviously, but The Boss Baby is sent to a family to find out some important information that is threatening the popularity of babies. To the new parents, he’s just a normal, intensely demanding, baby (who wears a suit that they don’t seem bothered by!) But their existing child – who hates this intruder for taking his parents’ attention away from him – soon works out that something’s ‘not quite right’ with his new baby brother. What follows is a mix of sibling competitiveness, rivalry, one-upmanship, togetherness, partnership and finally brotherly love. That’s all I’m going to say – go and watch it!
The Boss Baby is really funny. Really, really, funny… There’s a lot of humour aimed specifically at parents. At times throughout the film you sit there and think “Yes, that’s EXACTLY what [child] was like at that age!” The boys laughed throughout the movie – anything to do with bottoms, vomiting or nudeness seemed to have them giggling away (typical boys!) It’s worth noting that neither of them fidgeted at all from start to finish. Rather impressive for 8 year olds.
At the end, Toby told me that it was “a really good film. Very funny.” We’ll be going to see it again no doubt, so that big sis can watch it too (she had a netball tournament today).
The Boss Baby is a film that shouldn’t be over-thought. Just enjoy it for what it is and don’t get caught up wondering why the parents seem oblivious to the baby’s strange habits … or why babies are delivered to your doorstep like an Amazon order! Just go with it, and enjoy it.
