The flights are finalised, the accommodation is sorted, and the time off work is booked. Ladies and gentlemen, you’re going to Hawaii! Among the whoops and cheers, there are a few of you that will be thinking to the future. What are we going to do? Where will we stay? How will we make the holiday of a lifetime unforgettable? Your first thought will be to visit Honolulu and that’s fine, but there is so much more to the islands than the capital city. By all means, take in what the town has to offer yet make sure you soak in as many places as possible.
Below are four you shouldn’t miss.
Kailua
Like Honolulu, Kailua is located on the island of Oahu, so it’s not a long bus journey. However, it’s far enough away to have its own identity. In this town, you’ll find a beach vibe which is hard to ignore. Well, you can because you’ll be that chilled that you won’t give a damn about anything! From Lanikai Beach to the Beach Park, there are plenty of spots to soak in the sun. It wouldn’t be Hawaii without getting a sweat on though and Pillbox Hill is a fantastic place for a hike. Any water babies can snorkel, scuba or kayak at Na Mokulua. The water is unbelievably blue.
Pearl City
Are there any history buffs in the audience? If so, then Pearl City is the most important place on the island of Oahu. As the name suggests, it’s home to the US naval base which was attacked by the Japanese in 1941. The surprise attack is one of the most infamous skirmishes in the history of World War II, and you can check out the heartbreaking memorials. There is also a museum which explains everything in fine detail and is entertaining and informative too.
Kohanaiki
There’s a chance you’ve never heard of this place before and that’s because it’s a hideaway for the filthy rich. They don’t want average Joes turning up and ruining their holiday, so it’s a well-kept secret. Well, until now. Yep, pretty much all of what you can find on this island is available on the main islands. However, there isn’t the same luxury or the chance to spot a celebrity. Kohanaiki is like a world apart as you get to see how the other half lives. It might cost you an arm and a leg, but it’s an amazing insight. Well worth a day trip even if you don’t stay for long.
Lahaina
Lahaina is on the island of Maui, so this means you’ve got most of the bases covered, which is one reason to visit. But, another motive to stay there is shopping. Don’t get it twisted because it isn’t a high-end street full of boutiques. It’s more of a budget place where the market stalls and local vendors sell their products. Still, there are plenty of bargains, and the atmosphere is terrific. Lahaina is somewhat of a hub for sports too.
