I am hugely impressed that Hofmeister lager is making a comeback. Yay! Remember the yellow can with the bear and the 3.2% lager, back in the 80s/90s? Well, it’s nothing like that now! Hofmeister is back! It is now at a decent strength of 5% ABV with a light carbonation and a clean fresh floral taste.
A small band of enthusiasts has taken over the Hofmeister Brewing Company. The new beer is a slow-brewed genuine Bavarian Helles lager. Hofmeister Helles is brewed in the heart of Bavaria by a 4th generation family brewery, one of only four certified slow brewers in the region.
Hofmeister lager recently won the Best Lager of 2017 award in the prestigious IWSC Beer Awards
When it was decided to bring back the bear, the new brewery owners wanted to make sure the new lager was pure Helles perfection. After a lot of touring, talking and tasting they discovered a family-owned brewery on the edge of a Bavarian forest. The beer is a genuine Bavarian Helles, made according to the Reinheitsgebot German beer purity law that uses only three ingredients: mineral water, locally grown barley and Hallertau Hops.
The brewers use the purest mineral water from an underground lake beneath the Ebersberg forest. They use award-winning hops from the Hallertau region and locally grown barley that’s malted in their own malthouse. Hofmeister beer is lagered slower at zero degrees, for a fresh, crisp, Helles lager with an ABV of 5%.
PackThePJs was sent a case of 12 to try, and although normally I am not a lager drinker, the new Hofmeister has a clean crisp taste and is a lovely drink for any occasion. We featured it in our recent Christmas Gift Guide for Foodies.
There are now 150 new outlets for Hofmeister in the UK. Recently, Moonpig have started to offer two gift sets on their site. Hofmeister is a fantastic beer. I can’t wait for it to be on draft as it will go down a storm in the UK I’m sure.
