Conjuring images of a plunge to the depths of the Grand Canyon, ‘The Ultimate Abyss’ is actually the latest thrill slide attraction offered by Royal Caribbean on its new ship, Harmony of the Seas. Providing one more reason to book a Royal Caribbean cruise this year the (older) kids will absolutely love it and mums and dads might like to have a go as well!
The Abyss will reach a height of around 150ft and will be approximately 216ft long and run from the roof of the Sports Zone (Deck 16) down ten decks to the Boardwalk on Deck 6 near the ship’s Aqua Theatre. The ride isn’t actually a waterslide but instead is a bona fide thrill ride at sea. The thrill seekers will ride on side-by-side slides that spiral and turn alarmingly at a speed of nine miles an hour as they drop over 100ft. The riders will use a customized mat to descend and will experience what can only be described as a multisensory experience of video and audio effects as they whirl down ten decks.
For those wanting water slides, then Harmony will also be equipped with a triple multi-level slide complex situated just above the Central Park area of the ship between the two ship superstructures.
Harmony of the Seas is an Oasis class ship, which is launched in May 2016 and will begin seven night West Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona until October 2016. The ship will then relocate to Fort Lauderdale for Caribbean duty.
