There are two places where you spend most of your time during the week, and that is more often than not at your work premises and your home. With so many hours spent in your home, it’s important you make it a welcoming space you are excited to get back to and a place you are proud of, especially as you may have guests and family members coming round during the week.Â
When you start looking into home interior tricks, there are so many different things you can do to make your home feel like a positive and welcoming place to be. And in a lot of cases, there are many affordable changes that you can make instantly (along with some bigger changes, but we will look into these in another article for you). For instance, you can have flowers delivered and display them in your living room, you can have pictures displayed on your walls, plants to fill up large spaces, as well as a mirror – mirrors are great for making a room look bigger and brighter.
To help give you some inspiration, we have put together a quick guide on simple ways to make your home a more welcoming place. Some of the points you may already be doing, others you might be able to do straight away – all of them are affordable and can be done without having to do a lot of DIY.
Decorate your home with flowers
Flowers are ideal for making quick, positive changes to your home. You can purchase some flowers from your local florist (or have them delivered) and display them in a vase in various rooms throughout your home. No matter the type of flowers you opt for, they will add colour to the room, and more often than not, people will notice and compliment them when they walk in. A simple thing we have learnt over the years is to spend a little more on flowers, as this way they will last longer.
Hang pictures on the wall
Utilise the wall space in your home and hang pictures on the wall. Pictures are perfect for creating a new dynamic in each room of your property. A picture creates a talking point when people come in, it gives you a memory to relive, and it adds colour and vibrance to the room, whilst removing any large empty space on the walls. If you don’t like the idea of hanging pictures on the wall, an alternative option would be to hang artwork on the wall instead. There are so many sites online that sell artwork as a print in all ranges of sizes.
Purchase a mirror
A trick we like to use to make a home more welcoming is to use mirrors in different rooms. Mirrors come in all shapes and sizes, and the main benefit of using a mirror is that it reflects light. Reflecting the light in the room gives the illusion that the room is bigger, and it helps make a room look brighter. You can, of course, use the mirror to see your own reflection before going out, which is also useful. We mentioned above about using art or pictures to avoid large spaces on your walls, you can also hang a mirror on the wall to do this, and you can style a mirror on the wall.
Use plants to fill up empty space
Along with using flowers in vases, you can also buy some indoor plants to decorate your home with. Indoor plants come in all shapes and sizes, helping decorate even the smallest of rooms. Just like flowers, they can add colour to the room as well as become a focal point – when you put a plant in a room, then remove it, you’ll instantly notice it’s not there anymore and miss it! Plants are also known to improve air quality, but the trick is to buy a plant that you can keep alive easily. If you aren’t green-fingered, the last thing you want to happen is for your plant to die, and you have to replace it again.
Repaint your walls
This step may be a little messier than the above options, but it can make a huge difference if you haven’t done it in a long time. Repainting your walls can bring a new lease of life to them as well as give you the chance to change the colours. Over time, the sunlight and general wear and tear can cause your walls to look tired and make the room look old. If you don’t give them a top up with paint, they can keep tiring and slowly become a space which you aren’t proud of.
Play around with your lighting
Lighting is often overlooked in people’s homes. It’s an area people don’t invest much time in, even though a few changes to your lights could make the biggest of differences. With modern-day tech, you can also install smart lighting, which can be controlled via your voice or an app on your phone. A key benefit to smart lighting is that it’s cheaper to run than normal lights, and you can access a larger range of colours – some bulbs allow you to colour the room red, green, purple and so on.
When updating your lighting options, consider buying different types of lights at the same time. A standing lamp in your living room, instead of your main lights, could make the space more relaxing. Having side lamps in your bedroom or a couple of LED strips can be nicer on your eyes at night than the harshness of an overhead light.
Hopefully, there are a few changes which you can make to your home from our list. What changes are you planning on making and why? Which of the suggestions in our guide did you think would make the biggest difference to someone’s home? Is there anything missing that we should be adding?
