In an increasingly international and diverse world, it’s important for children to not only understand but also embrace difference. It’s one of our most important roles as parents to teach our children about equality and respect, and to treat people the same regardless of their culture, nationality, or background. They’ll learn that diversity is to be celebrated, rather than feared. Read on for some tips on how you can teach your child to respect other cultures from a private school in Hertfordshire.
Model respect yourself
The best thing you can do to help your child learn respect is to demonstrate it yourself in your own interactions with people from differing backgrounds. Let them see you treating everyone equally, no matter their nationality and culture. Teach them that we’re all unique and that is to be celebrated and embraced. It’s what makes life interesting and exciting! Try to avoid stereotyping people or making jokes about other cultures. Pull your child up on this if you see them doing it. They’ll soon learn that it’s not acceptable to treat people differently based on their culture.
Expose them to different cultures
Take your child to cultural festivals or events happening in your local community. Encourage them to take part in activities. This will teach them about what different cultures value and celebrate, and that there are different ways of thinking and being in the world. That other people behave and live differently to them. You could even mark certain cultural traditions in your own home, such as celebrating Diwali with a party or creating lanterns to mark the Chinese New Year. Write down important cultural dates on your calendar and take the time to learn about these traditions with your child.
Read books and watch TV programmes
Another way to explore different cultures is by reading books about them or watching educational TV programmes. Take a trip to the library and find some books on a particular culture your child is interested in so you can research it together. Children’s TV channels often run programmes which explore specific cultures. So if your child likes learning by watching this is a great way to help them understand how diverse the world is. You might also be able to find some games your child can play which teach them about different cultures.
As you can see, there are many ways to help our children develop understanding and tolerance of difference, so they grow up to be respectful adults.
