With the cold weather surely on its way, this is your last chance to tidy up your garden before the damp and the drizzle makes it look like the wilderness has really taken over! But where are you supposed to start?
It’s so much easier to do gardening work in the summer; you’ve got the sun on your back and the dry ground beneath you. Those are prime working conditions for creating a backyard paradise for your family!
But the October garden prep is also very important. It helps set the scene for the spring, and without a bit of elbow grease right now, you’ll have an ordeal in the backyard next year.
Pack Up the Rubbish First
Make sure you focus on lifting as much rubbish as possible first of all. Get rid of those old plant pots. Get rid of those boxes near the shed. Make sure the compost bin is as tidy as possible, etc. Once you’ve gotten rid of all of this surface level garbage, you can take your time with the rest of the garden. And even just bagging things up to throw away can make the garden look a whole lot nicer!
Trim Then Mow
You’re going to want to tackle your plants, bushes, and trees first of all. Then break the mower out, get the lawn trimmed and use a weed eater to get rid of any obvious plant invaders. After all, if you do it the other way around, you’ll have a bigger cleanup job to do. It’ll be hard to navigate around all the dead leaves, twigs, and general debris; that’ll make it hard to even see the lawn in the first place!
Get your clippers out and trim back all your plantlife as much as possible. This will make them grow back bigger and better next year. Then brush all of the offcuts into a pile, then mow the lawn. You can collect all the trimmings together at once this way, and deal with the rubbish in one go. That’ll save you at least an hour out there!
Don’t Forget About Your Fence and Walls!
You’re going to want to clean up the walls and fencing that surround your backyard as well, thanks to just how grimey they can get as the years go by. And not to mention how much brick and/or cladding can crumble off, which you’ll definitely want to get patched up and sealed over before the cold really sits in. These areas can often be a heat leak, and that’s just a waste of money!
You might want to invest in a Mobile Scaffold to make this kind of job easier to manage. Walls and fencing can get pretty high, and you don’t want to strain your back trying to reach these areas. Get yourself a long handled brush and a bucket of water, and then climb on the scaffold when you’re nearing the roof of your home.
