Yesterday, for a Father’s Day treat to daddy, my children took us to an early showing of the new animated film, The Secret Life of Pets. I have been waiting to see this for AGES, as they’ve been playing trailers at the cinemas for what seems like forever. So leaving our two dogs, two cats and tank of fish in peace at home, off we went to get a glimpse of what they get up to once we leave the house. Ha Ha – I hope the film isn’t an indication of the chaos they really get up to!
The story is set in New York City and is based around main characters Max, Duke, Mel, Buddy, Gidget and Pops (all dogs), along with Chloe (cat), Sweatpea (bird), Snowball (rabbit) and Tiberius (hawk that lives in captivity on the apartment block roof).
I don’t want to give any of the plot away, but let’s just say that Max gets a new ‘brother’ (Duke) and they have to go on quite an epic adventure before they become friends. They encounter the ‘Flushed Pets’ gang of unwanted animals who really don’t like humans – or domesticated animals – very much, so Max and Duke’s friends need to rescue them.
Chloe is a brilliant rotund cat – I loved her line when she said to Max “I’m your friend and as your friend I gotta be honest with you, I don’t care about you or your problems”. LOL. Typical cat!
A favourite character, who unfortunately doesn’t have a starring role (in this film at least – there HAS to be a sequel or three) is Leonard the poodle, who loves his heavy metal head banging whereas his owners leaves him listening to classical music.
Overall, all four of us gave this film 5 out of 5. We loved it. A teeny bit disappointed that a spaniel didn’t make the cast list, but there are bound to be sequels as there are endless story opportunities.
After the film, as is ‘tradition’ with our family, we headed across the way to McDonald’s who just so happen to be running a Secret Life of Pets promotion with their Happy Meals … and these are the gifts my two children received
We really do encourage you to go and see this film – guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone’s face x
