As parents, we know our role when they’re unwell; we look after them and nurse them back to health. When our children have problems when it comes to their confidence, a simple hug and motherly reassurance won’t just do the trick. When our children have issues in confidence, it seriously impacts their entire life, and we witness it first-hand. But, far from us being powerless to make any positive changes in this, we are able to help them; it’s just that it takes the guise of different forms…

Pinpointing The Problem
Sometimes it’s a deep-rooted problem or maybe it’s a more “cosmetic” issue. Anyone that has a teenager will know that everything hinges on how they look, and if they look different or there’s something they feel self-conscious about, this can cause problems with their entire life. Their teeth are a good example because so many teenagers go through having braces, these unsightly gates stuck to their teeth can make them feel ashamed and ugly. But there are things that can be done as far as cosmetic issues are concerned. Invisalign provides invisible braces, so this can help them to look in the mirror and not feel so self-conscious. If it is a cosmetic issue, there’s usually some way around it.
Improving Their Self-Esteem
Ridding children of their self-esteem is, unfortunately, like shooting fish in a barrel! As our children are growing up, they can feel sensitive to so many changes in life and this can impact their emotional abilities. We can look at our children and think that maybe they’re being “too sensitive” but if we have this opinion, we’re clearly not tackling the problem. We can help to improve their self-esteem in many ways. Encouraging our children to take chances, and make healthier risks is one way to improve their confidence. We can feel that we’re doing the best for our kids by protecting them, but this can do more harm than good.
Looking At What You’ve Done To Cause This
We can, unknowingly, set them on a path towards issues with their confidence early on in life. When we look at our kids and wonder why they’re so different to us, it could be something simple we did when they were younger that forced them to put their defences up. We see it all the time, the father that endlessly makes little jokes at the expense of their son being a common example, and this causes them to either retaliate or become shy. That’s not to say that we, as the parents, are exclusively to blame, but we have to look at how we raise them early on. If we were overprotective, they can find themselves having so many shocks to the system that they internalize their problems.
To help our children with confidence issues, it’s not as simple as finding one specific reason; it’s about the cause but also taking the opportunity now to make significant changes. Just because our child is shy now or they have a low opinion of themselves doesn’t mean this is the path they are destined for in life. As parents, we have to take the initiative and help them. But we’ve got to be careful not to guide them too forcefully, because it is their journey, not ours!
