Pizza is a favourite food of kids and parents alike. Invented in 1889 by baker Raffaele Esposito in Naples, pizza is one of the world’s most popular foods. Truly though there is nothing finer than fresh dough, a variety of tasty toppings, and a woodfired pizza oven to cook it in. For children like Toby (10) and Millie-Mae (12) who both love pizza and who are interested in learning how to cook, pizza is a great way to learn. They can see bread dough being made to learn about how yeast works and then with a variety of toppings can design their own pizza. Finally they can cook it themselves, before eating it all!
Pizza Express
There is, no doubt my children really love pizza and it’s a great way to get them to eat vegetables. We often bake our own pizzas either in a woodfired oven or on a gas-fired barbecue. There is nothing like freshly baked pizza. However, when we are out and about on our travels, we can always find a lovely pizza at Pizza Express. They have a great range on their menu with something for all the fussy eaters in our family. And, frankly, what finer way is there to learn about and eat great pizza than to visit your local Pizza Express, the company that first introduced Pizza into the UK in 1965.
Competition time
Pizza Express are about to make childrens’ dreams come true by running a competition that involves designing their very own pizza. Pizza Express will pick one lucky child’s pizza idea to be included on their popular Piccolo menu across all of their 470 UK pizzerias. The ‘Create Your Own Pizza’ competition for up-and-coming pizza chefs (or pizzaiolos) will run until Monday 17 June 2019 inclusive and is open to all children under 13 years.
What do I do?
All you have to do is head to https://www.pizzaexpress.com/ and choose four ingredients from a selection of 20 possibilities. Then you have to give your pizza an iconic name to make it stand out from the crowd. Ten semi-finalists will be chosen from across the country. The ultimate winner will be selected by a panel of experts, guided by Head Judge Jane Treasure, the Food & Beverage Director of Pizza Express.
So, don’t delay get to the website and choose your toppings and a great name. Before long we might have Mighty Matilda’s Meaty Marvel right alongside the American Hot or the Margherita!

This is a fab idea, my eldest would love to create her own pizza! I shall have to get her to enter!
My son doesn’t like pizza but the girls do. We often make them at home because they love choosing different topping combinations, even though he won’t eat them, the boy loves getting involved.
Might have to check this out with them x

I think making Pizza is a great way to introduce children to cooking. I also found it good to have a couple of homemade pizza’s in the fridge in case my children’s friends visited. It is a cheap way to feed a group of starving teenage boys. A fun competition.
Sebby is desperate to create his own pizza – will be entering this for sure
