The title says it all really. When it comes to coats, I’m so fussy I rarely end up buying one. And here lies the problem. When we had that cold snap recently, I didn’t have a coat to keep me warm. Nothing. A few cardigans, a snug-fitting cagoule that I use for wet-weather dog walking. But if I was going out-out, I had nothing suitable. Not only that, but I had been invited to attend a lavish cruise ship naming ceremony … ok, on the night it would be evening dress, but the weather was forecast to be simply horrid. How could I walk around the open decks without a coat? I needed to shop …
So, what’s my problem?
Quite simply, I want a single coat “for all occasions”. One that I can throw on to do the school run, but that also works for a trip into town, or a night out with friends. Or even a weekend on a cruise ship! Does such a coat exist? Well, going on past shopping experiences I’m tempted to say no. However, an opportunity came along that possibly could help with my dilemma. I was invited to pick a coat from the range at JD Williams! What perfect timing!
The Shortlist
I do love an online shopping session, and this one was no exception. With so much choice I was somewhat spoilt, but I did have to keep reminding myself what I was looking for. In the end, it came down to two. Both have a bit of a nautical theme, but that wasn’t intentional!
Navy Soft-Touch Belted Microfibre Jacket
What I liked about this coat is that it is soft and lightweight. I know we’re in winter still, but hopefully spring and summer are not far away and this would be an excellent item to take away on my travels when the evening temperatures drop. And anyway, because of its ‘loose’ nature, you can layer up under it if needed.
The other coat that took my eye was this one:
Red Single-Breasted Jacket
I just loved the bright colour of this coat. It’s a classic style, especially when you do the buttons and belt up – but I wouldn’t do this as I like it loose and flowing. It looks smart, yet works equally well with jeans (which I live in).
Decision?
I picked the red Mac. I felt it was the more multifunctional one out of the two. And the colour is just so eye catching! On the cruise ship I teamed it up with a pair of blue jeans and a navy printed blouse (and Converse trainers as you walk MILES on a cruise ship tour!) In the evenings, I wore it over my evening wear going to and from the ship’s restaurants and bars. It really looks the part, and it’s really comfortable.
So, is there such a thing as a coat for all occasions? Sure, there is! You just need to know where to look ?

This is me right now! I found three holes in my coat recently and have been on the search ever since for a new one. I’ve bought and returned five coats now and still haven’t found one that fits nicely – hopefully it won’t be too much longer 🙂
I have so much trouble choosing coats, but I totally agree with your decision – even just on looks I much prefer the red one!

For me it’s all about the colour. The last thing I want is to choose one in a bright colour and then when it rains it just looks faded!
I’d have gone for the red Mac as well. I always seem to pick the wrong coat. I now have just one brand that I buy and they are great all round coats. Only issue is the hoods are never quite big enough. I couldn’t go out in just cardigans though. I like to be super warm.
Oh I like the red one. I am in the middle of trying to find a Mac and a nude one at that. It sure is hard to get the balance of smart yet good wearing and one that looks like it’s not gonna fall apart.
Personally, I think the red single breasted coat is probably the best transitional piece for this time of year. I also love vibrant colours. This one.
Trench coats are the best for all occasions and can be dressed-up or down for work or casual – we love ours! Great picks x
Buying a new coat is a big decision, especially as they are usually more expensive!
I have a coat for all occasions, a waterproof one for walking, a smart one and a warm one – my coat cupboard is overflowing!! Love your choices
oh i would have gone for the red mac too – it looks like such a classic timeless piece!
I look out for the colour, design and fit. Buying a coat is an investment for me.
Having a good coat for winter and another for summer is always a good choice as they become real staples and something you will wear time and again. Love your picks
