When it comes to family holiday destinations, the same names always pop into your head; Rome, Mallorca, Paris, and many other traditional holiday places. Today, I want to introduce you to one of the hidden gems of the world; Chania. It’s a large city on the Greek island of Crete, and there are so many things it offers that make it a brilliant family holiday.
Close Proximity To Clean Beaches
If you go on a summer holiday with your kids, then they expect to see some beaches at some point! Thankfully, one of the great things about Chania is that there are plenty of clean beaches nearby. If you rent a car in Chania, then you can pretty much get to all the beaches surrounding it. Now, your kids can play in the clean sand and crisp Aegen Sea, while you relax on a beach towel recharging your batteries for the evening activities. Then, when you’re done, it’s just a short drive to the main city area if you want to get some food or head back to where you’re staying. There’s a convenience to this that you struggle to get in a lot of other popular family holiday destinations.
No Shortage Of Family-Friendly Attractions
Something I love about Greek Island cities is that they pack so many cool attractions into a relatively condensed area. This makes it much easier for families to see as much as they can without having to deal with kids getting tired! Here, there is an abundance of really great museums that your children will find fascinating. This includes a Greek Football Museum for any sport-obsessed little ones! They can see loads of iconic trophies and special football jerseys; it’s just an interesting place to go with your family. Then, you have the Venetian Harbour, some really cool castles, and an iconic lighthouse. All of these things will amaze your kids, while you should also find the history behind them very interesting as well. Also, the great thing about Chania is that all of these things aren’t too expensive.
Plenty of Child-Friendly Eating Spots
What’s the hardest part of going on holiday with your kids? Finding somewhere to eat! A lot of foreign countries have cuisines that are far too developed for younger people to enjoy. As such, you struggle to find somewhere to eat and usually end up looking for the nearest McDonalds. The beauty of Chania – and Crete in general – is that the food here is more than a match for your child. They have loads of basic dishes like burgers, chips, and so on. But, even the classic Greek dishes will please your kids. Get them to try a Gyros, which is basically just grilled chicken in pitta bread with some chips stuffed inside – they’ll love it! Plus, breakfasts are so easy as they do delicious yoghurts, little cakey brioche things, cheese, fruit, and so much more.
It may not be the most well-known city in the world, but Chania is definitely a place worth going with your kids. So, who knows, maybe this is an early contender for your summer holiday in 2019?
