Wintertime in the UK can be an incredibly dull and depressing time. Aside from all the fun of bonfires, carol singing, Christmas shows at the kids’ school and preparing to spend Christmas with family and friends, it can also mean some well earned time off for the adults who have to work.
Why should Christmas be the same every year? The Christmas holidays could be an ideal excuse to go and chase some winter sun! With many destinations to choose from, there are so many options to suit various budgets, likes and dislikes, to get a change of pace from the grey skies of the UK.
No matter where the destination, there are some basic things that will need packing, as well as some handy hints to try and keep the Christmas magic alive while overseas.Â
Packing The Gifts
The obvious issue with going away over Christmas is the packing of gifts- if that’s what you choose to do. It’s a good idea to plan this aspect well in advance and prepare the kids for what’s going to happen, so they have a good idea what to expect as well.
Is the holiday the gift to the family? Bear in mind that travelling over that period can be very costly. Maybe then pack a small stocking of gifts for the children to open on Christmas morning, or save present giving for the return so you can get some sale bargains!
Another option could be to allow some budget for shopping while away- allow the children to choose their gifts- make sure to allow extra room for the return trip, as you’ll be bringing more back than you took!Â
Keep Some Traditions
While spending Christmas day in a hotel room might seem like a wonderful prospect for some parents (No post-Christmas dinner clean up!), there might be some things that would be unsettling for kids who enjoy the tradition of the holiday.
While being away with your son would mean boys swimwear being worn in place of a Christmas jumper, or your daughter spending time splashing in the pool instead of reading Christmas cracker jokes, try to keep some traditions.
If the family watch a particular movie on Christmas eve, try to make that happen. Find a way to make sure Father Christmas is able to visit, too (though, see point above- manage expectations here!) Maybe pack some decorations so that the magic of Christmas remains in the place you’re staying.
Plan Ahead
Heading overseas for the Christmas period can be an expensive way to break tradition. Plan ahead and save enough money to make it happen. Make sure to manage the kids expectations which allow them to get used to the idea of being away from home for Christmas, as well as the developing excitement of the season!
There are plenty of deals available which, if you book far enough in advance, can mean that costs won’t inflate an extortionate amount, either.
