Jooki Music and Story Player for Young Children (and a Competition!)

We worry a lot about the effect that screen use has on our children. Younger and younger children seem to ‘need’ screen time. Let’s be honest, in many households the TV or a tablet is often a parent’s ‘go to’ babysitter. We want our children to be active, but with the dark nights now hitting by 4:30pm, going out for a walk isn’t practical.

PackThePJs was contacted by the company that make the ‘Jooki’, a music and story player that entertains young children while the adults are safe in the knowledge that everything is age-appropriate. With the Jooki, children from toddler age upwards can dance to their favourite music or listen to their favourite stories – without first needing to ask mum and dad.

Jooki is a speaker system that is totally self-contained and plays recordings at home or while travelling. Parents still have full control, because they prepare the playlists that the device uses. It sounds complicated – it really isn’t – so read on to learn more.

So how does it work?

The Jooki is essentially a speaker system for kids. The speaker is controlled by an app on a parent’s phone through which you can set up playlists. Each playlist (music, stories etc.) is associated with a different character. The Jooki characters are a Knight, a Whale, a Ghost, a Fox and a Dragon. Each character, when placed on the central hub of the Jooki, will play the associated playlist.

As an example, let’s say that Baby Shark song is assigned to the Knight – whenever your child puts the Knight character onto the speaker, it plays the song (as demonstrated here by our lovely neighbours) …

The technology

To use the Jooki you will need a Spotify Premium or Deezer account from which to stream the music. There is the option to load music off-line to a Micro SD card (up to 32 GB); using the app you can then assign characters to the tracks.

Music (or stories) start when a character is placed on the Jooki. ‘Toy Touch’ technology makes it easy for children to use the Jooki and have great fun. Parents control content and volume and the Jooki has an 8-hour battery for outdoor and travel portability (but you can run and charge from a USB port, which are becoming more popular in cars). There is also a headphone jack for parent-friendly peaceful car time!

The children

Xavi and Zac loved playing with the Jooki. The video above confirms this! A definite hit by the looks of it. The boys are in control of what they want to listen to – it’s never too young to learn about making choices. Zac, who is nearly 2, loved it … he’s at that stage where he wants a bit of control and he gets that with this!

Putting some nap-time stories on some characters means they can doze off while listening to a favourite audiobook. Or – when they have FAR too much energy – they can dance! And, for the children, there’s not a screen in sight 😊
