The first holiday as a couple can be an exciting one and one that you will probably remember for the rest of your life together. It can be an amazing experience, but not without its potential issues. Travelling can bring up certain situations you might not have experienced together, which could cause some arguments. This isn’t ideal at a time you’re meant to be enjoying yourselves.Â
So how can you ensure that your first holiday as a couple is a success and is just the first of many to come?
Agree on the type of holiday you want
If you’re lucky, you’ll both be on the same page when it comes to where you want to travel to. Portugal holiday destinations for couples are popular with many, rather than a long haul trip.
But you might have to compromise. If one of you wants to lie on the beach for a week and the other wants to hike through the mountains or waterski, then you could risk one of your being very unhappy. Be upfront about what you’re looking for. But also be willing to try other things too, even if it’s just for part of the trip.Â
Talk about money
It can feel awkward talking about money at this stage in our relationship. But you should agree in advance on what your budget is and who will pay for what. It can prevent problems later on if one person’s expectations are different.
Don’t place too much importance on the trip
Yes, a holiday is a sign of a greater commitment in a relationship but don’t put too much emphasis on what it means. Your holiday isn’t going to be perfect 24/7 like a movie. Sharing a bathroom with someone for the first time can be an experience. If you are placing too much importance on this trip then it’s unlikely that you’ll be totally happy: It’s not fair on the other person.Â
Travelling can be stressful and if you’ve never seen your partner stressed, it can come as a bit of a surprise. But it’s totally normal.
Make space for each other
Spending all day every day with someone can be quite stressful if you aren’t used to it. Give each other a little bit of space in order to have time for yourself. It could be a few hours just to relax by yourself or visit a local area.
Plan in advance
The key to a great holiday is in planning. Taking care of everything before you go, and having all the necessary insurance and research done on the area can save you a lot of stress and money when you’re there.
Whether you’re in a casual relationship or go one to get married and have kids, that first trip away is a special one. So you should try and make some good memories. Most of the issues that couples have on holidays can be avoided. Plan well and talk in advance about what you want from your holiday.Â
