Sometimes, emails land in my inbox that are perfectly timed. About a month ago, Millie-Mae’s bed frame broke. It was an inexpensive gas-lift storage bed from the famous online auction marketplace; the metal frame had distorted as the bed slipped around on the laminate floor. To be fair though, it did last a few years. But the mattress had literally sunk in one corner due to the frame collapse. And then an email from Simba arrived, asking if we’d like to review a hybrid mattress or their Ludlow Bed Frame.
I’ve always wanted to try their mattresses, but on this occasion, it was a no-brainer to choose a bed base as Millie-Mae needed one. She has also been suffering with a headcold/hayfever for the last week or so, with non-stop sniffing and coughing every day and night. We have followed all the advice on how to sleep with a cough, but she’s still struggling. So we felt she deserved a treat. We chose a double size Ludlow frame, in Linen-feel Vanilla, with 4 storage drawers in the base.
Ordering and delivery
The website is very easy to use. You pick your bed size, your chosen colour option, whether you want drawers (and pick how many). There is also the option to have an ottoman style frame, where the whole top lifts to give full storage underneath. We decided against this due to what happened to Millie’s last bed with a similar design.
Once ordered, we were soon contacted by their delivery team to book in a delivery day – which was very soon after ordering. They contacted me on the morning of delivery to tell me how far away they were, and they arrived on time.
I didn’t realise that they had been authorised to take away Millie’s old bed and assemble the new one. Unfortunately we weren’t quite ready for that, so opted for them just to deliver and we would assemble. Millie is a teenager, and we need notice to get anywhere near her bed given the ocean of clothes scattered across the floor! The delivery guys were lovely. They took off their shoes to carry the bed parts into the house and were friendly and chatty. They really wanted to carry the bed upstairs and assemble it too!
Assembly
Assembling the bed took two of us no more than 5 minutes. The two bed base parts slotted into one another, and the headboard was attached with some plastic screws. And then we simply had to put the mattress on top and leave Millie to make her bed.
About the Ludlow Bed Frame
The overall style is minimalist, modern and contemporary. The colour options were all calming – we picked Vanilla due to Millie’s rather eclectic taste of wall décor! Against a white or cream wall she would have loved the Velvety Peacock option as that’s a favourite colour of hers. What is great about the Ludlow bed is that you can truly ‘mix and match’. You pick your colour, size, and then a variety of matching bases so you can design your bed to suit your needs best.
The headboard has just the right amount of padding. The headboard is quite substantial – it makes a statement.
The drawers are strong. I advised Millie not to overfill them, but they are stronger than most divan base drawers I’ve seen before. They are a good size too – and with 4 of them Millie can easily rehome the items that were under her old ottoman style bed.
A week later …
Of course, Millie is now asking for the matching mattress to complete the new look! She’s started to revise for her A level mock exams, so I’ve said I’ll think about it, based on her results! So now, rather than sitting on cushions on her floor she’s revising on her new bed. When Jack dog allows her to that is …
The Ludlow Bed Frame looks luxurious – boutique hotel style quality. We love that it is made in the UK. When we furnish our house in Wales we will definitely consider Simba for frames and mattresses. They are excellent quality. The style options are such that you can pick and choose different looks and combinations to suit each room.
