More often than not in our house food can get a bit staid and bland. You cook the same old things and the children don’t like certain foods. Dare I say it gets boring … But help is at hand from Life of Spice. We were sent two Spice rub collections from Life of Spice to try out – in the hope of saving our taste buds by putting the zing back into our food. Now, don’t get me wrong. It’s not all about chilli heat and garlic and ginger. We are talking about real taste – about proper herbs and spices blended in a scientific way to produce a specific flavour effect. If it’s too strong, the children simply won’t try it.
Life of Spice Collections
We received the Italian Collection and the American Rub Collection. The company actually do 21 different Spice Collections, including baking spices, rubs, salts, and herb blends. You can produce brilliant meals using just one of their blends. There is enough going on in one collection to keep you going for several weeks of interesting meals. But “wait”, I hear you say: “How do I know what to cook?” Well you can cook anything you like with the freshest ingredients you can find. Each of the collections come with a bunch of recipe cards that will tell you everything you need for when inspiration escapes you.
Our Experience
On two successive evenings we cooked meals based on spice blends from the American Collection.
Chicken Fajitas
Firstly, we used ‘Much adobo about nothing‘ to make chicken fajitas. They were fabulous and the majority of the ingredients were things we already had. Just a couple of chicken breasts, sweet peppers, a courgette and some red onion and a packet of wheat tortillas. With guacamole, sour cream and grated cheese, they were inexpensive, filling and delicious. As a bonus, the children loved them!
Steak Night
The children were out at karate and I just so happened to have two nice steaks in the fridge, and some giant mushrooms that needed eating. We used the steak rub ‘Pepper Smurf’ from the American Collection (simply oil each side of the steaks, add half a teaspoon of rub to each side and leave for 30 mins) and then according to the recipe card produced a very nice steak.
The mushrooms used some of the ‘Italian herbs’ from the Italian Collection. With a chunk of baguette and a glass of Malbec this was the nicest steak dinner I have had in a long time!
So, we’ve certainly enjoyed Life of Spice so far – and there’s so many recipe cards that we’ve yet to try (BBQ ribs, feta salad, Southern fried chicken to name just three). They would make a really nice gift for any foodie in your life, they are good value too. You can even put your own collection together if you wish. Each one comes with a recipe suggestion or there are recipes available online. There really is no need to ever eat bland food again!
